What is Heart iQ?

Heart iQ is a practice of embodied, conscious communication. It brings attention to what we feel and how we express and receive, using four directions of connection: upward, downward, outward and inward.

Heart iQ is a practice I teach for authentic, embodied and conscious communication. When I say communication, I don't just mean the verbal channel. I mean the full-bodied receptivity and expression of your deepest truth, your consciousness and your sexuality, so that all of you can be transmitted in a way that actually lands with another person, and so that you can open to receiving them in return.

Awareness and embodied experience

There are two primary forces we work with in this practice: consciousness and life force. Consciousness is the part of you that can see, witness, notice and be aware of everything moving in you and around you. Life force is the energy, the juice, the flow of vibrancy that either moves through you or doesn't in any given moment, and it expresses through the body. When consciousness and life force come together, you get what I call embodied awareness, which is the foundation of good communication and real intimacy.

If you're conscious but not embodied, you come across as heady. If you're full of life force but not conscious, you tend to be full of drama, and your happiness becomes dependent on whatever is happening around you. You're at the effect of life rather than in relationship with it. Consciousness is what gives you the awareness to see what's actually moving, because you can only change what you're aware of.

Noticing the stories you carry

When I talk about tethering to more consciousness, I mean connecting to that witness part of you, the part that can notice what's going on physically, emotionally and energetically, and in your mind, where there are thoughts, judgments, fears and stories. Many of us carry intimacy stories we believe are true about ourselves and about connecting with other people. We may also recognise learned family messages and cultural expectations in the way we talk to ourselves. Consciousness gives you access to all of that so you can begin to unpack it and work out what is truly you and what is conditioning.

Part of intimacy is having the opportunity to share this with another person, rather than doing all the unpacking alone and presenting a finished, tidy version of yourself as a gift. Connection doesn't require you to arrive polished. It can come through your mess, through your humanity, through your honest exploration of what is actually true for you in the moment.

The language of polarity

In the language of Heart iQ, I call consciousness the masculine energy and life force the feminine energy, though this isn't about gender. Every person, regardless of gender, needs to cultivate both a healthy, grounded life force and a clear, sacred consciousness. When these two are brought together and fused in the body, something shifts. I call it the engine of polarity: as you access more consciousness and life force together, it creates a circulation of charisma, attraction and magnetism that changes how you show up with whoever you're wanting to connect with.

Four directions of connection

To make this practical, I use a simple model I call the four directions of connection. The heart, in this work, isn't just the thing at the centre of your chest. It's the opening of your consciousness, your sense of divine connection, your literal heart, and your sexuality, all held together.

The four directions are up, down, out and in. Up is your ability to tether to source, to feel the light of your own heart and soul, to trust the larger picture of life and to feel your own intrinsic goodness. Down is your ability to drop into the depths of your emotion, your humanity, your energy and your thinking, staying connected to the ground of your own experience. Out is your ability to express fearlessly, to share all of who you are with others without hiding and without shame. In is the direction most of us find hardest, because many of us have been taught it's better to give than to receive. We prioritise independence over the healthy dependency of actually needing others, asking for what we want, knowing what we need, and then letting it in, letting ourselves be touched and moved by another person.

None of these four directions is more important than the others, though I think the in direction is often the one our culture needs most right now. Heart iQ is the practice of working with all four, building the capacity to be both conscious and embodied, in this sense both masculine and feminine, so that connection with yourself and with others becomes less about performing readiness and more about honest, full-bodied presence.

Following the process

The Four Directions of Connection

  1. Up: tether to source, trust life, feel your own goodness
  2. Down: drop into emotion, humanity and thought
  3. Out: express fearlessly without shame
  4. In: ask for what you need and notice what you choose to receive.
