There's a dynamic I've watched move through circle for as long as I've been facilitating, and it still catches me every time it arrives. We send our energy in one direction, with complete sincerity, and it turns out it was meant for somewhere else entirely.
It comes through encounter work in hundreds of different shapes. Let me give you one example.
Somebody takes the mat to work with their father. A man from the circle is enrolled to stand in for him, which means he has consciously agreed to receive the projection, to be the father for as long as the process needs him to be. What follows isn't performance. Years of unsaid words start to move, and there's real courage in it, and the whole circle is right there with them.
They finish. And nothing happens.
When the field goes quiet
The field doesn't move an inch. Crickets. Whatever just happened hasn't landed anywhere, and the person on the mat can feel it as clearly as everyone witnessing can. They've just done the bravest speaking of their life, and the circle has gone flat, and now they're quietly wondering whether they failed at it.
They didn't fail. Something far more interesting is going on, and it usually takes a few minutes before anyone sees it.
Then they see it themselves. Actually, I think this might be my mother. He was the one who did it. She was the one who never came.
Violation and neglect leave different wounds
This distinction changes everything about how you meet a person's pain. The father was the violation, what was done. The mother was the neglect, what never arrived. And in this case it was the neglect still holding the charge, because being harmed by somebody is survivable when somebody else comes for you afterwards.
Nobody had come.
So a woman from the circle is enrolled instead, and she stands where the man was standing. And it arrives almost immediately, in a voice that isn't the adult's voice at all.
Where were you. You knew. You were supposed to come and get me.
The circuit completes. The whole field opens, and everybody in the circle feels it happen, because a field that was flat one minute ago is suddenly alive.
Same person. Same courage. Aimed somewhere else, and everything moves.
The law of direction
What I want you to take from this is a law rather than a story.
Energy moved in the right direction liberates a field. The identical energy, expressed just as truthfully and just as fully, pointed in the wrong direction, sits there and thickens. It doesn't matter how accurate the words are or how real the emotion is. If the charge was never meant for the person it's being aimed at, the field will tell you, and it tells you by refusing to move.
This is why insight alone changes so little. A person can understand their history completely and still be aiming their unfinished business at the wrong figure, sometimes for decades. The body knows the difference even when the story doesn't. And a circle, because everything in it is amplified, knows it fastest of all.
And notice it was never really about fathers and mothers. That's simply the shape this example took. The same dynamic arrives as anger aimed at a partner that was always meant for a parent, or as a charge aimed at one group that belongs to the first group that pushed us out. The content varies endlessly. The direction is what decides whether anything moves.
Three questions worth sitting with
If you work with people, in any capacity, these are worth carrying for a week.
-
Where in your current work does the charge seem to point somewhere other than where the story points? The person who talks endlessly about one figure while the field stays flat is often carrying something for somebody else entirely.
-
When you meet someone's pain, which wound are you actually meeting? What was done to them, or what never came? The two need different medicine, and most of us have a bias towards one of them.
-
What does the field do when truth lands? Start tracking the difference between words that move a group and words that don't, because that difference is the most reliable instrument you have.
Where to watch this live
On Friday 11 September I'm teaching a free live session on exactly this territory. It's the opening session of a three-day virtual retreat called What Only a Group Can Heal, and it stands on its own: two and a half hours on Zoom, where I play real footage from a Circle Work Facilitator Training and pause it constantly to show you what I'm tracking in the person and the field, and why I make the call I make.
Camera optional, no hot seats, no breakout rooms, and no replay, because the session is live only.
You can save a free seat at heartiq.org/group-heal-session-one.
Circle has been teaching me this law for twenty-five years, and it still catches me. The direction matters more than the volume. It always has.
