In this Heart iQ teaching, masculine and feminine name qualities of experience present in everyone. They are not instructions about gender roles. The framework draws on a spiritual belief in an enduring aspect of awareness, alongside the changing experience of being alive.
The essential masculine in each of us yearns to know, to awaken and to live and breathe consciousness. Yet knowing without experience is like the sound of one hand clapping. The masculine is therefore balanced by another force, the sacred feminine. The feminine in each of us, whether we are a man or a woman, is pure life force energy in motion. It is the experience of life itself. Everything that moves, everything that is witnessed, is the feminine, and that which is witnessing it is the masculine.
A model of polarity

I use the image of a pump to describe a contrast between two qualities. Here it is a metaphor for the felt relationship between awareness and expression, rather than a physical account of energy moving through the body.
The glass and the wine
Another analogy I use is a glass of wine or beer. The container, the glass, is the masculine. The drink itself, the wine or the beer, is the feminine. You cannot experience the fullness of what is inside without something to hold it. As we strengthen our inner masculine, we build the structure and capacity to hold more love and life force moving through us. The masculine is the witness, the stillness, the part of you that observes. The feminine is the movement itself, whatever form that movement takes.
This is why, in Heart iQ, we talk about husbanding your feminine. This is not about gender or about relying on a partner to hold this for you. It describes something every person, man or woman, is invited to develop: the capacity to contain the parts of ourselves that want to run into drama, chaos or wildness, while still allowing that aliveness to move through us. Being able to witness and feel at the same time is what we call embodied awareness, and it is the central skill we work with in this practice.
Feeling and witnessing together
There is a further way of seeing this. Imagine the feminine as love, in the sense of white light made up of every colour combined. Anger, jealousy, joy, hope, grief and gratitude are all frequencies that, brought together, become love. Love in this sense is not a single soft emotion, it is the accumulation of everything felt fully. Light, by contrast, is consciousness and presence, the part of you that helps you stay clear when things get messy, dramatic or confusing. It is the awareness that keeps you present rather than lost in whatever is moving through you.
This distinction between knowing and experience matters too. Some people accumulate a lot of knowledge, teaching and even spiritual understanding without living it in their body. Taken out of context, this can become a way of avoiding the harder, more human parts of experience, something sometimes called a spiritual bypass. Others stay only in experience, moving from one sensation to the next without a container or a clear voice to say when enough is enough. The aim, as I see it, is to bring knowing and experience together, so that what you understand is also something you have felt and lived, and what you feel has some clarity holding it.
When we connect with both our masculine and feminine inside of us, our consciousness and our life force, our knowing and our experience, we develop what we call embodied awareness. This felt sense of unity while remaining deeply connected to ourselves and to everyone around us is what tends to be activated when Heart iQ is practised together in a group setting.
